Walter Shaub, the former White House Ethics Chief, who resigned to protest Trump’s ethics violations, is on a roll today. Earlier, he tweeted that Chief of Staff John Kelly is “going as a racist” for Halloween after Kelly’s revisionist account of slavery, the Civil War, and Robert E. Lee. Just now, Shaub wrote a tweet highlighting allegations made by the former Mexican Ambassador to the U.S., Arturo Sarukhan, that the U.S. State Department has been told to recommend Trump hotels.
Mr. Sarukhan, who served as ambassador between 2007 and 2013, called the Trump administration a “kakistocracy,” which means rule by the very worst people. He went on to say that an ex-EU functionary told him that the U.S. State Department Protocol Office was instructed to encourage foreign dignitaries to use the Trump Hotel on their visits to D.C.
American Oversight, a watchdog group, retweeted Sarukhan, adding that they will be issuing a Freedom of Information Act request to the Trump administration to find evidence for these allegations.

As Walter Shaub said, “this is a shocking level of corruption,” if it is true. But, as he also points out, the fact that it might be true is a disgrace in and of itself, resulting from Trump’s refusal to divest from his businesses upon assuming the office of the presidency. He is violating the Constitution’s foreign and domestic Emoluments Clauses that prevent a member of the federal government from using his position to enrich himself with gifts from foreign and/or domestic interest groups.
If true, this is a shocking level of corruption. But the mere fact that we even have to wonder is a result of POTUS’s refusal to divest. https://t.co/kq4iGm7sQc

Trump now has an ever-expanding list of emoluments violations and these new allegations are sure to make matters worse.
Of course, the Republican-controlled Congress will not take any action against this flagrantly corrupt president, although they went out of their way to gin up fake scandals as a pretext for subjecting Hillary Clinton to endless hearings that helped torpedo her chances of becoming president.
In so doing, Republicans are choosing the sinking Trump ship over America’s democratic institutions. Unfortunately, they are taking the rest of us with them.
